NIGERIANS ENDSARS PROTEST: Programmes Manager, Amnesty International Nigeria writes 9jreporters

SEE LETTER BELOW:

Dear Bartholomew,

Together, we have been pushing for law enforcement reform in Nigeria for years. Thousands of Nigerians have taken to the streets. Thousands of Amnesty supporters and members have emailed the Nigerian President demanding reforms in the police force.

And now our pressure seems to be working. The Inspector General of Police in Nigeria has announced the dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a unit of the Nigeria Police Force infamous for its abuse of power – Amnesty International Nigeria documented 82 cases of extortion, torture, and ill-treatment by the SARS in the last 3 years alone.

But our fight to end impunity doesn’t end here. The authorities must ensure that all officers accused of human rights violations are brought to justice; detention facilities are open for inspection; and the 2017 Anti-Torture Act is implemented once and for all.

Please watch this video and tell the Nigerian President and the Nigerian Attorney General to ensure true police reform and justice in the country now.

I said it before and I’ll say it again: with your support we can end impunity.

Seun Bakare

Programmes Manager, Amnesty International Nigeria
