ENDSARS: Police reformation will end brutality and unprofessionalism- Rtd. CSP Eregare

Following ongoing "ENDSARS" protest across Nigeria, a retired chief superintendent of police, Dr. Robinson Eregare, has said that reformation of the police will end their brutality and unprofessionalism.

In an advise to the federal government on Saturday, Eregare who won over 104 local and international Awards during service years, noted that the poor salaries and welfare packages are some of the major reasons officers engaged in different acts for survival.

Eregare said the Nigeria police performed excellently whenever they travelled-out on peace-keeping mission to United Nations and has never brought shame or bad name to the image of Nigeria.

He however commended the good citizens of Nigeria for the joint out-cry to end police brutality as he cautioned the federal government to tackle the menace fundamentally and holistically because the police are Nigerians and not aliens.

“I want to commend the good citizens of this country for the joint out- cry on SARS brutality etc. The question is why are they brutal, are they not Nigerians?

“Let’s face the truth, check the police posted to Shell, Chevron etc whether they are brutal, the answer is no. The take – home – salaries of police and teachers in Nigeria is like just give them something to survive but the senators, legislators and executives who does nothing are treated like gold/Kings in the same country we all call our own.

“These same police are the ones that faces armed- robbers, cultists, kidnappers etc and when they die in courses of their duties, no one cares, their children are left to suffer on the streets but if one senator, governor dies the whole world cries.

“It’s unfortunate,let the government go round the world and see how other countries treat their police and emulate them for us to get that loving police that we are yearning for. Pay them well with good welfare packages, if not , even if you change the name from SARS TO SWAT, HONEY OR SUGAR etc there will be no different because if you change a poisoned drink from a bottle to a golden-cup, it will still kill,” he asserted.
